What Is Visual Field Testing?

Your visual field is how wide of an area your eye can see when you focus on a central point. Visual field testing is one way your ophthalmologist measures how much vision you have in either eye, and how much vision loss may have occurred over time.
A visual field test can determine if you have blind spots (called scotoma) in your vision and where they are. A scotoma’s size and shape can show how eye disease or a brain disorder is affecting your vision. For example, if you have glaucoma, this test helps to show any possible side (peripheral) vision loss from this disease.
Ophthalmologists also use visual field tests to assess how vision may be limited by eyelid problems such as ptosis and droopy eyelids.

Description:
I believe that the HoloLens 2 would be a great headset to use for this type of exam. With eye tracking technology that is already built-in and the ability to use the headset with glasses helps eliminate a lot of roadblock for this technology’s use. As I start the development process in Phase 1 with your support, I will be able to address and better understand the headset’s limitations and functionality. Your initial support will allow me to acquire the headset and the necessary licensing, software and support documentation to start developing. I have lots of experience using the current Visual Field Exams and the ability to use my personal eye charts and visual progression to help measure the usability and accuracy of such an application. With over 30 years of performing a routine Visual Field Exam, I am a perfect candidate to test and try to improve this eye test. With a professional background in Information Technology (IT), I will be able to use my knowledge and technical skills to code and develop the virtual application.
The ultimate goal would be to develop an Augmented Reality (AR) application to be used to test Visual Field Acuity. I strongly believe that the need for such an application is there and will help to improve on the current test devices. Adding the mobility of the headset would increase the usability for those individuals that cannot sit for a long period of time or have other types of physical limitations, just to have their head stuck in a “fish bowl”. Using an off the shelf device like the Microsoft HoloLens 2, provides a commercially available device that can easily be deployed and in addition, AR is a new technology that is sure to improve over time, making the wearable device smaller and cheaper.
Automated Perimetry Test

Is the most common Visual Field Exam performed and it is the one that I have been taking every 3 to 4 months for the past 30 years.
To do this test, you will be looking into the center of a bowl-shaped instrument called a perimeter. The eye not being tested will be covered with a patch. The testing eye will have your lens prescription placed in front of it to make sure you are seeing as well as possible. You will be asked to keep looking at a center target throughout the test. Small, dim lights will begin to appear in different places throughout the bowl, and you will press a button whenever you see a light. The machine tracks which lights you did not see.
My Story:
For over 30 years I have been performing the same visual field test using the same machine at my doctor’s office. I, myself have been struggling with a visual disability my whole life, since I was a baby. I was diagnosed with Cataracts and Glaucoma. Over the years with various surgeries, my Cataracts have been removed and replaced with artificial lenses. Even after several Glaucoma surgeries, I have to continuously monitor my eye pressure and take the visual field exam to track my visual decline over time. Glaucoma is not a curable disease.
I am a proud Father of two young boys. Unfortunately, and to my greatest fear in life, it turns out that my eye condition was Genetic Because both of my boys struggle with a similar eye condition. While we still do not know what caused it or how to cure it, they are now also regularly visiting the eye doctor to monitor their vision progression. While I cannot cure their disease, making this one exam more enjoyable and less of a burden would be worth every penny. The adventure in development, following your ideas and dreams, persevering in challenging circumstances, leading by action will be priceless!
I have been working in the information Technology (IT) field in some way my whole professional career. I love learning and experimenting with new technologies. Utilizing technology is essential for me in every part of my life, from screen readers to magnifying tools, to light-up and big size keyboards. As my vision declines, I have to rely on more technology to do all the simple things in my life. While I am able to, I want to help and create something that could improve one thing in someone’s life.
